Metallica released the video “Lux Aeterna” and announced the new album “72 Seasons”
Metallica have shared the first song in six years “Lux Aeterna” and showed the video for it. This is the first single from their forthcoming 11th album, 72 Seasons, which will be released on April 14, 2023.
The video for “Lux Aeterna” was directed by Tim Sackenti, who collaborated with Depeche Mode, Coldplay and Lana Del Rey.
The sound of “Lux Aeterna” is a typical Metallica track: heavy, energetic and fast-paced. The song was written by vocalist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich. And one of its producers was Greg Fidelman, who had already worked with Metallica on the albums “Death Magnetic” (2008) and “Hardwired … to Self-Destruct” (2016).
Hatfield also shared details about the upcoming 72 Seasons album:
72 seasons. Our selves, true or false, are formed in the first 18 years of life [there are four seasons in each year, in 18 years a person experiences 72 seasons]. We get our idea of ourselves from our parents. We may be trying to systematize our personalities. I think the most interesting part of all this is the further exploration of these strong beliefs and their impact on the world today. Much of our adult experience is reenacting or reacting to childhood experiences. We remain captives of childhood or are freed from shackles.
72 Seasons will be Metallica’s first studio effort in six and a half years – their latest album, Hardwired… to Self-Destruct, was released in November 2016. In 2020, the musicians released a live record “S&M2”, recorded together with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.
In 2022, interest in Metallica increased: their classic song “Master of Puppets” hit the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first time – all thanks to the TV series Stranger Things. The band loved it, even performing with Joseph Quinn, the actor who portrayed Eddie Manson, who played the guitar solo “Master of Puppets” on the show. And frontman James Hetfield even confessed his love for the show, saying that he has been watching it since the very first season.
