On Tuesday, May 16, at the Cannes Film Festival 2023, the premiere of the historical drama Jeanne Dubarry starring Johnny Depp as King Louis XV of France, who ruled the country from 1715 to 1774, took place. Depp was greeted with a 7-minute standing ovation.
Johnny Depp made his first public appearance since winning a libel case against his ex-wife Amber Heard in June 2022. Jeanne DuBarry will be Depp’s first major post-litigation project, as well as his first film since the 2020s The Great, where he played photojournalist William Eugene Smith.
As writes Variety, the audience at the Cannes Film Festival violently met Depp. The artist was stunned by such a warm welcome and even shed a tear. A video appeared on the Web with Depp’s reaction to applause (the video can be viewed below). Director and actress of the film “Jeanne Dubarry” Maiwenn also burst into tears and told the audience:
“I want to share this moment with my love, my producer, Le Pacte. This production was difficult to finance… And I want to share this joyful moment with my entire team across the theater.”
On the red carpet, Johnny Depp was greeted by numerous fans. The actor was actively photographed with excited fans and signed autographs.
In Jeanne Dubarry, Maiwenn played a working-class woman, Jeanne Vaubernier. According to the plot, Jeanne starts an affair with Louis XV himself, thanks to which he quickly becomes an important person in society. However, due to her origins, Jeanne finds herself an outcast in the royal court.
The film “Jeanne Dubarry” 2023 should be released in Russian distribution. The premiere date has not yet been announced.
