The new Sony SRS-NS7 neckband is a $300 portable home theater speaker system.
Ideal for home use.
Does not work outdoors or in public places.
What if you could carry podcasts and music around with you, and watch TV without using headphones?
Sony’s neckband is the perfect speaker for home use
The Sony neckband loudspeaker is marketed as a home entertainment accessory that provides surround sound and avoids ear fatigue from headphones. It is smaller and far less intrusive than a full surround sound speaker system. But they are, of course, only good if you watch alone.
But why limit yourself to films? Neckbands are the perfect home music speaker.
Neck technology
The new SRS-NS7 is Sony ‘s first neckband to support Dolby Atmos, although you’ll need a Sony Bravia XR TV and a wireless transmitter adapter to make it work. Like many other wireless AV setups, the device synchronizes picture and sound, delaying the video slightly to match Bluetooth latency – such as with iPads and AirPods.
It also includes a microphone and connects to your phone so you can answer or ignore any calls. The speaker works up to 12 hours on a single charge or five hours of talk time.
This all sounds great, but it misses out on some of the biggest advantages of the neckband shape.
Help around the house
Neckbands are the perfect replacement for both speakers and headphones when working from home.
You can carry podcasts, audio books or music with you from room to room. You listen to soothing music or hard rock while doing housework. All this can stay with you while you move, and you can keep the volume lower than when using speakers, minimizing the annoyance of people in other rooms.
I like to use this speaker when I am doing something around the house. After about two hours of listening with normal headphones, my ears hurt. But this device allows me to listen for as long as I want.
That’s what one of the developers said.
